1919 manuscript overprint "Aerial Atlantic Mail. J.A.R." on 3c. brown Caribou, tied by St. John's machine cancellation of 4pm., April 19 1919 to envelope addressed to the Newfoundland Pay and Record Office London, endorsed "Per "Raymor" Aeroplane. N.F. to Britain. By Major Morgan and F.P. Rayham", with a later notation "Received in London 8 Jan 1920" and on reverse the usual London arrival datestamp of Jan. 7; the envelope with a vertical fold well clear of the adhesive which is well centred and with the manuscript overprint sharp and clear. A beautiful example of this great pioneer Air Mail rarity. With G. Bolaffi certificate (1966) and signed on the reverse C.H.C. Harmer (142a) Majors Rayham and Morgan, in their Martinsyde aeroplane made their first attempt at a transatlantic crossing, finally taking off from Pleasantville, on May 18 just about an hour after Harry Hawker and Mackenzie Grieve had left on their attempt from Mount Pearl flying field. Unfortunately, due to a mishap on take-off, the Martinsyde attempt was terminated, the aeroplane damaged and both airmen slightly injured. Major Morgan, on medical advice, returned to London to be replaced by Lt. C.H. Biddlescombe. A second attempt at the Transatlantic crossing (to try and beat the time established by Alcock and Brown) was made on July 17 from Quidi Vidi, but after covering some 50 yards the Martinsyde plunged downwards and was wrecked. Major Rayham returned to London by ship, taking the mail with him. (Photo Plate A)
