British Intelligence Forgery: Newspaper "Volkicher Beobachter" of May 21 1941, a specially produced facsimile of pages 3-6 (one of only two believed to exist) produced by the British Intelligence service for the purpose of persuading Rudolf Hess to cooperate after his flight from Germany to Scotland during the night of 10-11 May. The newspaper is correct in all respects except for a brief article at the lower-right of page 3 which states (in translation) "THE RUDOLF HESS FAMILY A correction. Berlin, 20 May. The National Socialist Party correspondent notifies: Reports in the foreign papers in which it is stated that the wife and the 4-years old son of Rudolf Hess are in the hands of the Gestapo are made-up stories by enemies. At the moment Mrs. Hess and her son are in a clinic for nervous diseases in Thuringen." The newspaper folded and with some small faults along the creases, nevertheless a fascinating and exceptionally rare document. Included with this lot is a copy of "The Black Game" by Ellic Howe which illustrates both the forgery and the genuine German newspaper and gives further details of the forgery   (Photo Plate 87)
