A busy day selling stamps and covers of the world.
With over 1,300 lots of fine stamps and postal history coming under the auctioneers hammer there was an exhausting day in store for both Harmers staff and clients!
The auction commenced in the morning with a session of over 330 lots of Great Britain.
Penny blacks were well received by bidders and in general the Great Britain section reflected how strong the market is for fine material.
The shock of the morning was lot 262 1912-26 6d. wmk. reversed, o.g. from the corner of the sheet. Stanley Gibbons catalogue value £1,100. Harmers estimate £400 – realised £2,908.
Some other realisations from this session include:
Lot 283 1929 PUC set on notepaper with first day cancellations realised £6,308 (estimate £4,000).
Lot 291 1929 PUC £1 overprinted “SPECIMEN” realised £1,575 (estimate £1,000).
Lot 299 1935 Silver Jubilee 2½d. Prussian blue error of colour realised £8,208 (estimate £5,500).
Lots 317 to 325 a recent find of unusual booklets offered as nine separate lots realised £6,202 (estimates £2,650).
The afternoon started with a small section of Air Mails the highlights were
Lot 347 Australia 1920 Ross Smith vignette on cover realised £2,423 (estimate £2,000).
Lot 433A Newfoundland 1919 cover carried by Alcock and Brown on the first Aerial transatlantic crossing realised £2,786 (estimate £1,500).
An interesting section of unique Essays by the famous stamp designer Jennifer Toombs saw:
Lot 442 Bahamas 1971 Christmas 3c. realised £606 (estimate £500).
Lot 445 Bahrain 1975 Women’s Costumes realised £727 (estimate £500).
British Commonwealth followed and we note:
Lot 475 Aden Hadramaut 1949 U.P.U. 1r. on 1/- error surcharge omitted. Realised £2,302 (estimate £700).
Lot 500 Bermuda 1938-52 £1 “Gash in Chin” variety. Realised £1,180 (estimate £750).
Lot 526 Canada 1897 Jubilee $4 used block of four. Realised £1,817 (estimate £1,200).
India and States continue to be popular as indicated by
Lot 653 Duttia 1917 (ca.) cover. Realised £1,938 (estimate £500).
Lot 733 New Zealand 1996 Health “Teddy Bear” miniature sheets, prepared for use but not issued. Realised £2,124 (estimate £1,500).
Seychelles is increasingly popular as demonstrated by
Lot 808 1895 Nine cuttings from De La Rue Day books. Realised £2,423 (estimate £1,000).
Lot 821 1893 12c. on 16c. wide lines between surcharge. Realised £1,817 (estimate £750)
Lot 858 Sierra Leone 1897 2½d. on 2/- realised £4,361 (estimate £4,000).
The sale concluded with a section of Foreign countries which included
Lot 1128 Ethiopia collection of 120 covers and cards. Realised £9,563 (estimate £6,000).
Lot 1154 Greece 1901-02 1L., 2L., 10L., 30L., 40L. and 50L. in blocks of fifty. Realised £1,817 (estimate £1,000).
Lot 1163 Iran 1911-13 set of 15 Die Proofs. Realised £3,028. (estimate £2,000).
Lot 1179 Italian States, Modena 1860 cover bearing a very rare usage of the 1859 20c. pair. Realised £4,720 (estimate £4,000).
Lot 1270 Poland 1865 envelope to France bearing a four colour franking of Russian stamps. Realised £1,817 (estimate £950).
Lot 1288 Russia 1958-59 Civil Aviation 40k. error red omitted. Realised £1,888 (estimate £250).
The total for the day was well in excess of £340,000.
